Someone On Earth
In a first-ever occurrence for this website, this webpage is not an essay but a script! When you click on the "Where Am I?" button, this script will search through the list of towns with 500 people or more that I found on geonames.org and give you a random location, based on how populous that town and that country are.
Warning: this script requires a 12 MB variable to function, compressed to about 2.7 MB and imported the first time you click the button. Don't be irresponsible with your mobile data!
I made this script in order to better learn about my neighbours: to research and imagine what it would be like to live around the world, distributing my attention according to the real distribution of human beings. It is not without its faults. The Wikipedia page may not always be accurate, and if you choose new locations too fast, the link may be to a previous location that had not finished loading. Further, the population data is at times out of date, and I am not sure how complete the dataset is in general; there surely must be places missing, and some seem to be mislabeled. Nevertheless, if you want a jumping-off place to experience the world through over 200,000 human settlements, I hope this will be a helpful place to start.
